My dog had diarrhoea after trying Dog Chef fresh meals for the first time: what should I do?

Learn what to do if your dog had diarrhoea or became unwell after trying Dog Chef fresh meals for the first time and how to make the transition easier.

Although most dogs experience improved digestion thanks to Dog Chef fresh meals, some dogs may temporarily have a more sensitive digestion during the transition.

There can be several possible reasons for this.

Was the transition done gradually?

We recommend introducing Dog Chef progressively over a period of around 7 days.

During this transition, the fresh meals should be gradually mixed with your dog’s usual food.

💡 Does your dog have a sensitive stomach? In that case, you can make the transition even slower by adding only a small extra amount of Dog Chef each day.

Were the meals stored correctly?

After delivery, the fresh meals can be stored:

• for up to 7 days in the refrigerator;
• and up to 10 months in the freezer.

If you receive more than 7 days’ worth of meals, we recommend freezing part of the order immediately.

⚠️Once opened or thawed, the meals can be kept for a maximum of 3 days in the refrigerator.

For proper thawing, place the meals in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours before serving.

Try a different recipe if needed

Dog Chef offers several recipes, and some dogs may be more sensitive to certain ingredients.

In some cases, switching to another recipe may help.

Getting used to fresh vegetables

Dogs that have been eating kibble for a long time may need some time to adjust to the vegetables found in fresh meals.

💡 During the first few days, thoroughly mixing the meals may help improve digestion.

Adding a little white rice

If your dog previously ate mainly kibble, temporarily adding a small amount of well-cooked white rice (cooked about twice as long as usual) may help stabilize their stools.

When should you contact your veterinarian?

⚠️ Please contact your veterinarian if your dog shows symptoms such as:

• blood in the stool;
• repeated vomiting;
• loss of appetite;
• lethargy;
• or fever.

In these situations, the cause is likely unrelated to Dog Chef food.
